Want to know how Trip Protection works? We’ve got you covered. Here are some important details about how payment following an approved claim works.
A few things to keep in mind: Most importantly, in the event of a qualifying unforeseen event that prevents you from going on or continuing your trip, you should contact your travel supplier(s) to cancel your plans within 72 hours of the event. Failure to promptly cancel or request to cancel your plans with the travel supplier(s) may impact the outcome of your claim. It is also required that you notify Spot within 20 days of the covered event or as soon as reasonably possible. Be sure to review your specific policy for more details.
Cancellation & Interruption Benefits
Here are some important dates and terms to keep in mind when it comes to Trip Protection for your Trip
Cancellation of your Trip
If a covered event occurs between 12:01am the day after you purchase Trip Protection and day your Trip starts, it is considered within the Cancellation period. This means you’re eligible for up to a 100% reimbursement of your non-refundable Trip costs if your claim is approved. The day your Trip starts is shown on the [Policy Details] page within your Spot account. If the date displayed in your account is incorrect or has changed for any reason, contact Spot at spot@getspot.com.
Interruption of your Trip
If the covered event occurs after the start of your Trip, it is considered within the Interruption period. This means you’re eligible for reimbursement of any of the unused non-refundable portions of your insured Trip cost if your claim is approved. You will be asked to provide a copy of your trip itinerary to help determine the value of the unused portion. For items that are not priced on a per-person basis (such as multiple occupancy hotel rooms and vacation rentals), or for Trips where the Travel Supplier does not provide a per-person cost, the dollar amount paid for Your Trip will be assumed to be split equally between all travelers participating in the booking.
How are eligible payouts determined?
This plan will not provide reimbursement for any canceled or unused bookings for which the Travel Supplier provided you a refund or credit for future use. Please be prepared to provide proof of cancelation or documentation or your request to cancel and any refunds by the Travel Supplier given when submitting a claim. Therefore it is important to add all travelers named on your travel documents to your original enrollment to ensure you and your travel companions may be eligible for full reimbursement of your non-refundable trip costs.
What is the Trip Delay benefit and what can it reimburse me for?
If you are delayed for 6 or more hours consecutively such that it prevents you from staying at your originally booked lodging accommodations as identified on your travel documents, this benefit is designed to reimburse you for necessary expenses such as alternate lodging, food, and additional hygiene items that you may need to purchase during your delay. Hang on to your receipts when making such purchases and be prepared to submit them when filing your claim. Note that alcoholic beverages will not be reimbursed.
Accident & Sickness Medical Expense Benefit:
This plan includes Accident & Sickness Medical Expense benefits designed to reimburse you for qualifying medical expenses if you become ill or sustain an injury during your Trip.
Are there any exclusions?
Yes, certain medical expenses are excluded. First and foremost, you may be ineligible for benefits if you are not medically fit to travel. You should review your full plan documents for a complete list of exclusions. Exclusions include expenses resulting from medical tourism, mental health care, experimental or investigative treatment or procedures, treatments provided by you a Family Member, or Traveling Companion; normal pregnancy (except complications of pregnancy) or childbirth; and treatment as a result of negligent, wreckless, or wanton behavior by you.
I have a pre-existing condition. Will my expenses be covered if my condition worsens during my trip?
There is an exclusion for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions that applies to the plan’s Accident and Sickness Medical Expense coverages as well as the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverages. If you have been actively treating for an injury during the 60 days (period varies based on your resident state’s policy) prior to purchasing your plan and your claim is based on this injury, your claim will likely not be approved.
However, the Pre-Existing Medical Condition exclusion will be waived if all of the following conditions are met:
- Your plan cost is received within 21 days of the date your initial payment for your trip is received (and additional trip costs for subsequently added travel arrangements are insured within 21 days of your payment for those); and
- You or your traveling companion are not disabled from travel at the time your plan cost is paid based on assessment of a physician.
Death resulting from a pre-existing medical condition will not be excluded. Death must occur prior to the termination date of the benefit under which the claim is being made.
I got sick or injured during my trip and continued treatment for my sickness/injury after returning home from my trip. Are those medical expenses covered?
No, this plan will only reimburse you for qualified medical expenses incurred while you are on your trip. Once you return home, your Trip has ended and your medical expenses no longer qualify.
