You’re here for one of two reasons:
- You’ve been injured and aren’t sure if your injury is covered under your Spot policy
- You’re about to live boldly and want to make sure you’re covered in case of an injury
If you’ve been injured, we’re sending you good vibes and hoping for a speedy recovery! If you’re checking to see if an upcoming activity is covered just in case, we’re impressed! Either way, you can rest assured that Spot has you covered in most situations.
Check out our list of common exclusions below, and keep in mind that a covered Spot injury is sudden, unexpected, and unintended in nature. If you're a non-US citizen, some additional exclusions may apply based on where you sustained your injury. If you’re still unsure whether you’re covered, please reach out to our claims team at claims@getspot.com!
Excluded activities include...
Illness + Other Bodily Conditions
- Suicide
- Self-harm
- Elective treatments + surgeries
- All illnesses, disease, and mental illness (except bacterial infection resulting from an accidental external wound)
- Any illnesses, disease, or condition related to childbirth, nursery care, miscarriage, or abortion + Pre-existing conditions and injuries due to overuse or wear and tear (like shin splints)
- Conditions or injuries that occurred prior to purchasing a Spot policy
Treatments
- Any expense that is not medical in nature
- Any expense that is not expressly recommended by a physician or doctor
- Damage to or loss of dentures, bridges, or damage to existing orthodontic work
- Ongoing treatments that started prior to purchasing a Spot policy
Drugs and Alcohol
- Injuries sustained while taking drugs which state law prohibits
- Injuries sustained while taking drugs which federal law prohibits, unless the drug is taken as prescribed or administered by a licensed physician
- Injuries sustained as a result of being legally intoxicated. A covered person is determined to be legally intoxicated if a test (like a chemical or breath test) is administered at the time of the injury
Activities
- Commission of, or attempt to commit, a felony, assault, or other illegal activity
- Participation in hang gliding, bungee jumping, parachuting, sail gliding, parasailing, parakiting, and motorized racing

- Fighting that involves striking (kicking or punching) the body. This includes injuries sustained through Muay Thai, boxing, and MMA
- Participation in or engaging in an activity in which failure guarantees death. Because people invent new and unique ways to hurt themselves everyday, we cannot put together an exhaustive list of everything we cover. This exclusion serves to address death-defying, thrill seeking activities like: slack-lining above the Grand Canyon without ropes, free-soloing El Capitan, and scaling skyscrapers Mission Impossible-style. If you have questions about your activity, chat us on the site or shoot us a DM on Instagram. Unless your activity is a death sentence, it’s probably covered.
Professional Sports
- a covered person who is compensated in exchange for their participation in a sport or league, i.e. an NFL player on the team payroll of the NFL. Prize winnings or prize purses for an athletic competition are not considered compensation for the purposes of this exclusion
In addition to the limitations and exclusions found in the policy, this provision will also not provide benefits for the following:
- Treatment carried out by a person who is employed or retained by the policyholder, or by any immediate family member of the covered person’s household
- Elective treatments, surgeries, or routine examinations
- Eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, orthopedic braces, appliances, examinations or prescriptions for them
- The repair or replacement of existing artificial limbs, orthopedic braces, orthodontic devices
- Charges for which the covered person would not be responsible in the absence of a Spot policy
- Expenses payable by any automobile insurance policy without regard to fault
- Any treatment, service, or supply not specifically covered by the policy
- Routine dental care and treatment, unless treatment is being provided to a dental injury sustained in an accident (impacted teeth must be natural and sound for coverage purposes)
- Rest cures or custodial care
